The History of Wheel Base

If you are a cycling enthusiast in the Frederick area than you are sure to have come in contact with Tom Peperone, owner of Wheel Base bicycle shop located on Market Street in downtown Frederick.

Tom first became involved with cycling in 1972 during his time at Montgomery College. He worked at a bike shop and got involved in bike racing. While he quickly learned that racing was not for him, he realized that he had the skills required to build, repair and sell bikes. He went on to become Service Manager at Metropolis Bicycle Shop in Washington, D.C. The additional skills he learned there convinced Tom that he was ready to open his own shop. Along with a partner, Tom opened the doors to Wheelbase at the In the Streets Celebration in October of 1985.

In 1990, Tom became sole owner of Wheel Base and the same year, married Emily Hardy. Both Tom and Emily are fitness enthusiasts and in addition to cycling they enjoy many other forms of exercise. Tom can be seen on the YMCA racquetball courts every Tuesday and Thurday evening. He also leads a group ride from the YMCA on Wednesday mornings.

Tom's enthusiasm for cycling is evident just from talking to him. He always offers friendly advice and encouragement especially for new riders and for kids just getting involved in the sport. Tom and Emily have cycled in many places throughout the United States and abroad, and are always willing to offer tips or to answer questions.
